Electrical Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: When Something's Not Working, We Find the Problem Fast.
Electrical problems are frustrating because the symptom is obvious, but the cause is hidden.
Power goes out in one room even though the breaker looks fine. Lights flicker randomly with no clear pattern. A breaker trips, but only sometimes. Something smells off, but you can't find where it's coming from.
You know something isn't right. You just don't know why.
That's exactly what electrical troubleshooting is designed to solve.
Power Electrical, Heating & Cooling Services specializes in diagnosing the real cause of electrical problems for homeowners and businesses across the Denver metro area. We test methodically, explain clearly, and identify the actual issue before recommending repairs.
Why Electrical Problems Are Difficult to Diagnose in Arvada
The Symptom and the Cause Are Rarely in the Same Place.
This is why electrical troubleshooting frustrates homeowners so often.
Electrical systems are interconnected in ways you can't see.
A GFCI outlet in one bathroom can control outlets in garages, kitchens, and exterior walls. A loose wire hidden inside a junction box can create flickering lights in an entirely different room. A failing breaker can make healthy outlets appear dead.
The visible symptom is often nowhere near the actual problem.
Intermittent issues are even harder.
A connection may only fail under heavy load, after the wiring heats up, or during specific temperature conditions. Some issues appear only occasionally, making them almost impossible to diagnose without experience and methodical testing.
Modern homes add another layer of complexity.
AFCI breakers, smart home systems, LED dimmers, interconnected circuits, and newer electronics all interact differently than electrical systems did even twenty years ago.
Diagnosing modern electrical problems requires current knowledge, not just basic electrical experience.
The right diagnosis matters.
Fix the wrong thing and the problem comes back.
Find the actual cause and you fix it once.

We don't guess. We find the real problem.

Joey came out and did a fantastic job looking over and cleaning my system for the winter. I had someone come out earlier in the year, but it felt more like he was trying to get me to buy a new system than help with my existing. Joey looked over the system, gave a few small but very helpful suggestions, and cleaned it. Could not recommend these folks enough.

Just moved into our new (2000 build) house and Joey came out to do winter maintenance on our furnace. This company was recommended from the former owner. Joey was professional, polite and very helpful - showing me how to change the furnace filter and the humidifier pad. He cleaned out the furnace, inspected the system, (which is newer) and told me everything was in good shape – didn’t try to sell me anything extra. I like them and will use them again.

1. Why does part of my house have no power even though the breaker isn't tripped?
This is one of the most common calls we receive.
Usually the cause is one of three things:
• A tripped GFCI outlet somewhere else on the circuit
• A loose or failed wire connection
• A breaker that failed internally even though it appears ON
Before calling, check bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and exterior outlets for tripped GFCI reset buttons.
If that doesn't restore power, professional diagnosis is usually needed.
2. Why do my lights flicker randomly?
Flickering lights can have several causes.
A single flickering fixture may simply have a loose bulb or failing fixture. Flickering when appliances start often points to electrical load or panel capacity issues.
Flickering throughout the home is more serious and may indicate a loose panel connection, utility issue, or failing breaker.
The location and pattern of flickering tells us a great deal about where the actual problem is located.
3. How do electricians diagnose electrical problems?
Professional troubleshooting starts with understanding exactly what the homeowner is experiencing.
From there, we inspect the panel, test circuits, evaluate outlets and switches, trace wiring, and test the system under load conditions when necessary.
For intermittent problems, recreating the conditions causing the failure is often the key to accurate diagnosis.
The goal is identifying the actual cause before recommending repairs.
4. Why does my electrical problem come and go?
Intermittent problems are usually caused by loose connections, failing electrical components, or wiring expanding and contracting with temperature changes.
A connection that works normally at room temperature may fail after heating under electrical load.
Failing breakers, outlets, switches, and aluminum wiring connections commonly behave this way before failing completely.
Intermittent problems require patient, methodical testing to isolate correctly.
5. Can one bad outlet affect other outlets?
Yes.
Outlets are connected together on electrical circuits, meaning a failed connection at one outlet can interrupt power to everything downstream from it.
A failed GFCI outlet can also disable multiple outlets connected to it elsewhere in the home.
This is why a single dead outlet can sometimes affect several others.
6. Why does my house smell like burning but I can't find the source?
A burning smell with no visible source is something we take very seriously.
Electrical burning smells often come from overheating wiring, loose electrical connections, or failing components hidden inside walls, ceilings, or the electrical panel.
Do not ignore this symptom.
Turn off the affected circuit if possible and call us immediately.
Electrical fires can smolder inside walls long before visible flames appear.
7. How much does electrical troubleshooting cost?
Electrical troubleshooting is billed as a diagnostic service call.
We evaluate the system thoroughly, identify the problem, and provide a clear repair estimate before any repair work begins.
Simple issues that are quickly identified are naturally less expensive than complex intermittent problems requiring extended testing.
If you move forward with repairs, the diagnostic cost is typically applied toward the repair.
We provide transparent pricing before any repair work begins.
Not Sure What's Wrong? Let's Figure It Out.
